Let's all use this forum to talk about different events to add to the alt.SPACE Festival calendar, by other artists and groups.
Just to be clear, today is the first time that some other people–who weren't initially involved in planning the overall event series structure– have been invited to use this forum. It would probably be helpful to introduce ourselves to each other somewhere here.
The main goals of inviting more people, from my point of view, are to open up the research groups to others already in Philly who are thinking about or experimenting with similar ideas–for this series of events in July, but also for the research groups as they develop into the future.
I'm also really curious about which artists and groups in Philadelphia are already working on projects that would "fit" with these research topics, methods, etc -- and would like to develop connections with other people investigating similar things. I think there's a lot of potential for productive overlap of certain projects–for example, within the context of the general ideas behind the atl.SPACE Festival.
Anyway, there are different reasons why I asked certain people about their interest in being involved so far -- some people may be already working on projects that fit with the alt.SPACE idea (alternative approaches to different forms of "space"), or any of the particular research group topics (such as "sound", etc). Other people have venue-based practices, in the sense that they're curently organizing programming at other spaces in Phillly (P'unk Avenue, Philadelphia Institute for Advanced Study, etc). Others are intimately involved in research-based practices already.
So... welcome, everybody!
PIFAS
So I thought I put this up here the other day, but it looks like it must not have gone through for whatever reason. Here is some information about the PIFAS space (as provided by Ramsey, one of the members).
The Philadelphia Institute for Advanced Study has dedicated itself since its inception in January 2007 to public, freely available scholarship, and to techniques which can be used, studied, and modified without restriction. Facilities include the Center for Frontiers Real and Imagined, our Clay Pigeon Salon of Inscrutable Objects, and the Richard Rorty Center for Philosophical Research.
And the following is a brief description of an event they put together this past Sunday (July 15). I apologize for this not being posted here earlier, but I think people might still be interested in knowing about it, especially as it might pique interest in other events organized by the space.
Soundtracks, as presented by the Acoustic Perceptions Research Group of the Philadelphia Institute for Advanced Study, investigates the shape of sound in a cinematic context. A collage which splinters the casual stroll of the viewer through genre postcards, animated icons, and the stillness of nature serves the spirit of interpretation and facilitates "CAPTCHA" moments, where meaning may be obscured contextually while remaining completely transparent. Without suspecting the ecstatic, the A>p>r>g submits, with revery alone, a caustic, shapeless substance to flow and react in the eyes of experience.
Here's their website, which has a calendar of upcoming events: http://www.pifas.net/

Communal Spaces
Hi again,
We're planning on having another event this Sunday (July 22) following the already scheduled underground soccer game. As of now, it should start around 4 or 5 and end around 7 or 8. It will be a presentation and discussion of research on communal spaces with Kim Förster and Lars Fischer who are involved with the German magazine, AnArchitektur, and the Institute for Advanced Architecture, New York.
politics were to construct itself only with recourse to the communal as
the insurmountable horizon the common space would be the the most
political and and conflict ridden place imaginable. This is for us an
interesting place.
While the date and time of the event aren't very flexible at this point, I'm curious how many people think they can come to this. It should be really interesting, especially for artists-in-residence and anyone working closely with Basekamp, as we will discuss Basekamp as a communal space and plan the forthcoming changes that will contribute to the communal aspects of the space. So, despite the full day, it'd be excellent if a lot of people were there -- perhaps it will be a nice"cool down" to the soccer game, as well as something interesting to do on a lazy Sunday.
Please post below about availability, as well as any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks!
will be there! Shayna

Sunday/July 22
I am tied in to work obligations on Sunday--I'll see what I can do to get out of it!
Public Gallery Studies
Public Gallery Studies offers a way to publicly explore personal perception of public art galleries. With Public Gallery Studies you can creatively share your desires, ambitions, thoughts, ideas and experiences, as well critique others' perceptions of public art galleries. Sure, you can also offer your presence silently..
An instance of Public Gallery Studies will take place at Tate Modern on Sat. 28.07.07 between 3pm and 6pm. This will be the 1st instance of Public Gallery Studies, and you are welcome to join.
I understand that most of you guys are on the other side of the pond, but that is somehow trivial in the context of the Tate Modern instance because the use of mobiles - cell phones, if you rather.. ;)
On http://pgs.aharonic.net/ you can find details about the practice in general, and about Tate Modern in particular. For example, http://pgs.aharonic.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=7 will take you to links which will show you structure of the place, works displayed and a bit of a walkabout..
Another event for those interested in Philly alt.spaces

Greetings all,
The Next American City pleased to announce our first-ever
24HourRoadtrip. This roadtrip, the first of many, is an experiment
testing the idea of geographical space to see what people do and when
they do it in reaction to the urban environment that surrounds them.
We will be using the city of Philadelphia as our playground from 11
a.m. on Saturday, August 18 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 19. For more
information, check out http://www.americancity.org/24/
We would love to have you along for the ride, not just as passengers,
but also as volunteers. We need people to help man phones, to drive
people around, and to generally assist in ensuring that everything
runs smoothly. We will be holding a volunteer meeting, for all those
interested, on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at The Next American City
offices. Our offices are on the University of Pennsylvania campus in
Meyerson Hall (210 S. 34th St.) in room G-12 (look for the Institute
of Urban Research sign).
If you would like to help us out, please email Pooja Shah at
pooja@americancity.org and include "24HourRoadtrip" in the subject
line. We look forward to having you join us in our wild ride Aug. 18.
