I've been thinking about audio-recordings of theoretical texts (as downloadable/streaming files) in relation to the Collective Playlist for some time. The idea came from recordings of Lawrence Lessig's book "Free Culture", which because of its CC license, was 'translated' into audio version by volunteers. In this case the labor was distributed: each chapter was read aloud by a different individual, and the chapters were strung together via a links page.
This led me to think about the maximum allowable length (in relation to "fair use" and copyright law) for referencing a text. In other words, individuals are legally allowed to quote a paragraph or two of a preexisting text as long as we cite the reference. I started to wonder about a loop-hole in this arrangement: if a different individual read each paragraph, could we circumvent this limitation?
During our phone conversation it occurred to Scott and I that this might be an interesting approach, to pick a few short texts and stage a reading-aloud event, where a single text might be passed from person to person, to distribute the work of reading, and also simultaneously be recorded, to fit within the scheme of fair-use. These events would then have primary benefits for the immediate group of individuals at the reading and secondary benefits via download from the Collective Playlist.

Haven't had the time yet to listen. Hopefully this evening.
One small note regarding the page you made, vlc is opensource and as such, at least, better than winamp for windows. You can get it from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ in all 3 flavours - mac, windows and linux..
remember books on tape?
We now plan to start each event with a reading of some text – almost everyone is into the idea of reading these out loud and recording the readings.
We have cheap digital voice recorder that should do the trick... I think Erica is buying batteries for it, and beginning to record some of the texts...
- personally I'm into the idea of reading one or two paragraphs at a time out loud -- we may bust out in spontaneous conversation though... I guess these conversations could be the 'cliff notes' for our audio books!

Sounds great. I look forward to hearing how the first reading/recording goes. I'm wondering in particular about the breaks-for-conversation...if these should be edited out or left in place, and if left how the listener might understand them as noticably different/other than the text being read. Would the listening want to hear the commentary?

I think, haven't checked, that placing all the links to the audio files on the same web page, might show "an intent" to copyright infingment in itself..(?)
BTW, which book/s is to be read..?
